  • Author's note: An Italian miner names Modesto Varischetti, a widower (with five children residing in Italy), was entombed in a flooded mine at Bonnievale, Western Australia, from March 19th to March 28th, 1907. When the luckless miner had abandoned all hope, Diver Miner Hughes dramatically emerged from the flood waters with a small electric lamp burning. This was the forerunner to Varischetti's subsequent sensational rescue (See: Relief of Varischetti.)
