Minnie Thorald's 18th birthday is lonely with step-mother absent and her father seriously ill. Her gentlemanly tutor M. Gabriel brings her a present of wild flowers and her cousin Miles tells her of their uncle's will which leaves them a fortune on condition they marry. She swears she will never marry without love. The next day her father dies and thus, without marriage - she loses title to the and wealth he enjoyed in trust - through Uncle Marrmaduke. M. Gabriel proposes to her and she accepts, and only then does he reveal himself as Royce Gabriel Thorold, another cousin to whom her marriage will deliver great fortune. They marry but a secret in Royce's past comes back to haunt them. Miles stoops to nasty tricks to separate Royce and Minnie. Narrator changes between Royce and Minne. (PB)
