On the Spanish island of Mahon, a merchant's son is buried prematurely after catching fever in Valencia. Only his fiancee's determination to keep a vow reveals that he is still alive. Story told to the narrator by a friar from a Capuchin convent between Villa Nueva and Port Mahon.
