In his editorial Crittenden says about his article that it is his 'search for the origins of what is probably our first writer, Watkin Tench, whose Narrative of the Colony of New South Wales is usually considered our first real book. Little is known of his life apart from his record of the colony. My article about this search was intended to be the first Chapter of a biography. The research was undertaken nearly thirty years ago.' (3)
