AbstractHistoryArchive Description

A genteel widow takes a position as housemaid in a poor but cultured house after trying several other occupations. She makes life smooth for the household, training her mistress in housekeeping and the piano - and marries her master's brother. Probably Australian setting but unspecified. Pleasantly written. (PB).

Notes

  • Probably a dramatisation of the suggestion made several times in the Ladies Page of well-educated women working as respected domestics, and the ideal relation between mistress and servant, e.g. - comments on the dreary rooms domestics are given. Idealised. (PB).
