The author's note states : "In September 1993, I was told two stories about life during the Second World War. The women who told me these stories are of similiar age. Genevieve Cooper comes from an Irish Catholic family that has been in Australia several generations. Maria La Rosa is the daughter of Italian migrants who came here after the First World War".
