19th-Century Australian Travel Writing
Richard Ernest Nowell Twopeny (1857-1915), Late Secretary to the Royal Commission for South Australia, was a journalist, author, and footballer. Australian urban life is described in Town Life In Australia. Originally a series of letters, the work is conversational in tone, and included an account of a walk around Melbourne, as well as extensive chronicles of society, social relations and the intricacies of daily life within the Australian colonies. According to the entry for Twopeny in the Australian Dictionary of Biography "the book appears to have been written as letters for publication in an English periodical; neither the letters nor their place of publication, if any, has been found".
