Notes

  • According to a letter from Grant to Sir Henry B. Hayes (a copy of which is included in Grant's journal entry of 27 January 1805), this poem was versified from a prose letter written by Alexander Pope to Atterbury. The letter contained 'Advice from a Philosopher to a Banish'd Man going into Exile'.
