  • Filmed in Sydney, including Pyrmont and Redfern.
  • According to the Australian Women's Weekly, at least some of the scenes were filmed on specially designed stages, rather than on location: 'Working from five volumes of photographs taken in 1901 by the NSW Government to show how neatly the streets of Sydney had been cleared up after a bubonic plague, Jonah's production designer, Roger Ford, had created an H-shaped set of three streets'. Set in Sydney in the first decade of this century, this is the story of Jonah, a hunch-backed orphan, leader of a local larrikin push, who, driven by ambition and the desire to give his son everything he lacked, sets out to succeed in business by any means he can. Jonah continues to prosper in business but at home there is increasing unhappiness and anger. His friend, Chook, however, despite Jonah's warnings, is determined to win the heart of the spirited Pinkey and find a way of earning an honest living.
