Language Is a Pain
2018
single work
essay
— Appears in: Voiceworks , Summer no. 113 2018; (p. 6-7) 'Choosing a theme for an upcoming edition of Voiceworks is always a fun and divisive time, forming alliances and bringing back previously rejected themes. The best themes, though, are the ones that have many interpretations, and I think Flare is one of those ones. Flare jeans, fire, the outward curve of a ship’s bow, angry nostrils, suddenness. These images and others can be found throughout this beast of a magazine.' (Introduction) -
Gender Is a Drag but This Magazine Is Not
2018
single work
essay
— Appears in: Voiceworks , Winter no. 112 2018; (p. 4-5) 'At the start of this print cycle, being both queer and newly-appointed as Editor of Voiceworks, I was excited for the possibilities that the selection of Drag as the theme for this issue would bring, but I also felt a certain level of anxiety about all the potential things that might go wrong. Bringing queerness into the spotlight is all too often a double-edged sword. (Of course, there are several definitions of the word drag that have nothing to do with queerness, but I’m gay so I only think about gay things). Personally I worried about having to read submissions treating gender defiance as a joke, and professionally I worried about the responsibility of producing an issue with a theme that has several very complex connotations. What would happen if all the submissions we received were problematic, transphobic, totally uncritical of RuPaul? We would have nothing to print and the entire publication would fall to pieces!! (Did you know queer people are more likely to suffer from anxiety than our straight peers?) As it turns out, my fears went totally unrealised. Instead, the issue you now have before you contains some of the most raw and powerful work we have published in a long time.'(Introduction)

Living Fossils
2017
single work
essay
— Appears in: Voiceworks , Autumn no. 107 2017; (p. 4-5) Ever since Egon Spengle first proclaimed it in Ghostbusters (1984), the murmurings of ‘print is dead’ have amplified to an unrelenting tinnitus. In the meantime, we’ve suffered many casualties of technological obsolescence: we’ve lost the unique joy of hour-long sibling-fights at Network Video over whether you’ll play it safe with National Treasure for the third time or risk it all on Blade: Trinity; the satisfaction of hitting ‘record’ on the cassette player at the precise moment Crazy Town’s ‘Butterfly’ kicks of; the mesmeric ride of staring at the Windows 3D Pipes screensaver for so long that you come to believe that you are, in fact, controlling it with your mind.' 'A State of Desperation’ : Battlers of the Arts Reflect on Australia Council Furore
2016
single work
column
— Appears in: The Guardian Australia , 23 May 2016; 'In the lives of all artists, it’s these moments of engagement with the structures of artistic progress that are not only the most memorable but the most crucial. The events of this week have forced a similar recognition in the Australian arts community. The sector is reeling from “Black Friday” – the day last week when the Turnbull government cuts to the arts finally swung as an axe and felled funding to 62 formerly funded companies. Express Media, the publishers of Voiceworks, was one of those hit. ' -

'Literature infrastructure' refers to the organisations within the literature sector that actively support writers and their work: state writers' centres, Varuna - The Writers' Centre, the Australian Society of Authors, literary journals, genre-based organisations, and writers' festivals.
The study aims to determine where each organisation sits in the 'supply chain' of support and what contribution it makes to the literature sector as a whole: what services and opportunities are offered to writers, how it contributes to the training and development of writers, whether it contributes to readership/audience development or community engagement, the extent of its national/international reach and how well it is served by its operational, financial and governance model.
The research also seeks to identify trends in the sector as well as gaps in the support currently available to Australian writers.
