Author's note which appeared with the Australian Town and Country Journal version in 1870: 'The following lines were written at the time by the compiler of the present brief sketch [ie. an accompanying article on the Kennedy expedition]; but they have not before been published in Sydney. They pretend to nothing more than a paraphrase, and a weak one, of the touching and interesting narrative of the faithful black [ie. Jackey].'
