AbstractHistoryArchive Description

The anthology features biographical sketches of immigrants from Vienna who came to Australia in 1938, at the time of the annexation of Austria (Anschluss) by Nazi Germany. Many, but not all were Jewish refugees. They brought with them a high degree of urban sophistication combined with a love of culture and the arts. Many rose to prominence in a diverse field of occupations, among them: Harry Seidler and Ernest Fooks (in architecture), Sir Gustav Nossal (in medical biology) and Louis Kahan, Madame Gertrud Bodenwieser, Eva Wagner and members of the Musica Viva in music and the arts.

Notes

  • Dedication: If we are to survive into the age that is being born, we will no longer be served by the Roman adage Si vis pacem para bellum - 'If you desire peace prepare for war'. But rather: Si vis pacem para iusticiam 'If you desire peace prepare for justice',

It is to all those who help, and who have helped in the past, to create better relationships among human beings that this book is dedicated. - Stephen Cantor, March 1988
