      • On a preliminary page is the statement: 'This book is a co-operative work by members of Nawakadj Nganjmirra's extended family ... The principal language of this book is Kunwinjku, in which these stories were originally told. They were transcribed directly from tape-recordings of narrations by members of Nawakadj Nganjmirra's clan. Each story was told and recorded first in Kunwinjku, and later an English-language version was told, sometimes by a different person. The English-language version of each story should not, therefore, be regarded as a direct translation of the Kunwinjku version, but rather as a re-telling.'
