At the outbreak of World War I, Franz Mueller is interned in a camp. Franz and the daughter of a local dairy farmer who is of German descent. She helps him escape but he is caught. At their next attempt he is bent on suicide and swims out to the open sea.

Always Afternoon was made into a TV mini-series. It was a German-Australian venture, and SBS's contribution to the Bicentenary 1988. The German version was presented at prime time by ARD and NDR TV.
