AbstractHistoryArchive Description

Traditional fairy tales from New Guinea, 'collected chiefly from the natives of a small village on the N.E. coast of Papua' (ix) where the author had lived for some years. Ker claims that no written record of these ancient stories existed at the time, and she and the villagers found it important to preserve the 'vanishing store' still treasured by the older generations. The stories are illustrated by 13 plates of photos from the region.

Notes

  • Listed as children's fiction in Australian Children's Books by Marcie Muir and Kerry White (Melbourne: Melbourne University Press, 1992-2003), although style suggests that it is written for a general audience.
