Compiler's note: 'A Note on Sources [:] The contemporary legends and other items in this book have all been collected in Australia between the late 1960s and the present time [mid 1990s]. Many were collected by myself, some by other folklorists and others by students in folklore courses that I have taught on and off since the mid 1980s. Most of these texts are housed in the Western Australian Folklore Archive at Curtin University, Perth [Western Australia]. In all cases I have used either an authentic and accurately transcribed text or a paraphrasing of the story as it is known to me. In most cases I give at least one source for each item and its variant(s) and I have also tried to indicate versions that are known to other collectors of Australian folklore, and to international folklorists, so that readers will be able to judge the extent of these apparently local tales.'
