Clarson was a partner in the Melbourne printing and publishing enterprises of Clarson, Shallard and Co., and Clarson, Massina and Co. After emigrating to Melbourne in the 1850s, he took an active part in public life. Clarson had a particular interest in botany, and was a fellow of the Linnean Society. He lectured on horticulture and wrote articles under the pseudonym 'Linnaeus'. He moved to Sydney in 1872, though retaining his status as a nominal partner of Clarson and Massina and Co. until the firm became A. H. Massina and Co. in 1876. In Sydney Clarson worked on the staff of the Daily Telegraph for some years, before retiring to Mildura.
