1 y separately published work icon Twitch Gothic : An Exploration of the Female Protagonist in Contemporary Australian Gothic Short Fiction Yvette Rochelle Harvey , Melbourne : 2018 17216691 2018 single work thesis 'Twitch Gothic is a creative practice-based PhD consisting of fifteen short stories, a short film and a creative practice exegesis. This project contemplates the creation of female (sexed and/or gendered) characters and related tropes in contemporary Australian Gothic short fiction. The short stories, described as Twitch Gothic short stories, draw on or are infused by the Gothic genre to provide moments of shudder, overlap, shock, repulsion and mutation. These short stories are arranged to reflect four theories central to the Gothic genre: Edmund Burke’s sublime, Sigmund Freud’s uncanny, Tzvetan Todorov’s fantastic and Julia Kristeva’s abject. Twitch Gothic examines some of the Australian social, political and cultural impacts on the Gothic short story. This mode of creative practice engages in genre overlaps and experimental character creations. The project encompasses liminal spaces, identity intersections and everyday provocations. Twitch Gothic explores the multiplicities that exist within the dialogue between the stories and the generative, rhizomatic context of a Gothic-infused creative writing practice. 1 y separately published work icon Diasporic and Transnational Identities in Selected Short Stories of Greek Australian Writers 1901-2001 Andrea Garivaldis , Melbourne : 2010 Z1848691 2010 single work thesis 'This thesis examines the notions of Greek identity in Australia through the analysis of selected short stories written in the Greek language by Greek Australian writers. Moreover, it focuses on the evolution of Greek identity in the diaspora and specifically in Australia during the twentieth century, whilst taking into consideration the recent phenomenon of transnationalism. The short story has been considered in the present study as the most representative and suitable type of genre to examine the concept of identity. As such, it is through the short story that different themes are explored, revealing aspects of Greek community-life in Australia, with an emphasis on identity issues and dilemmas. Attention is drawn to the empowering presence of a wide range of symbols and indicators, revealing an identity which is rich and complex in socio-cultural, historical and linguistic characteristics, relating to the Greek immigrant experience in the diaspora. The thesis concludes that there has been a shift from the original rigid migrant identity of the early twentieth century to a more flexible, tolerant, adapted and globally oriented identity.' 'This Master of Arts thesis analyses the effect of the personal history of Arthur and Corinne Cantrill, two Australian independent filmmakers, on their style of filmmaking. It analyses their representation of film-form experimentation within national Australian art in a range of independent film works and reflects on their cultural relation to the general history of independent filmmaking in Australia, America and Europe. It studies the circumstances that resulted in the appearance of the Cantrills' experimental film and their relation to international art theories and film experimentation.

This thesis also examines how the Cantrills' works, which were often critical of conventional filmmaking styles, and their critical writing, statements and promotion of their independent and experimental film work contributed significantly to theoretical discussion and argument about the physical nature of film within Australia. This examination is explored through asking and answering the central question: The work of Arthur and Corinne Cantrell is theoretically drawn from a tradition of European arts and visually drawn from Australian landscape and urban culture; can their work be identified and undertood as Australian art?'

1 y separately published work icon "Riding the Ethnic Bandwagon": Multiculturalism, Whiteness and Cultural Difference in Australian Publishing and Literature Jessica Raschke , Melbourne : 2004 Z1307069 2004 single work thesis This thesis offers a history of the confluence of forces that have contributed to understandings, representations and uses of writers deemed 'ethnic' or 'multicultural' in Australia, particularly since the introduction of the official multiculturalism policy in the mid-1970s. It examines several significant cultural arguments about multiculturalism and literature, and the connections between the psyche of 'whiteness', 'ethnic' or 'multicultural' writers and writing, government policy, and interventions by publishers, academics, and institutional bodies in Australia. It introduces contemporary authors and texts into the arena of public debate at a time when multiculturalism is in question.

Jennifer McDonald , Melbourne : 2002 Z1307754 2002 single work thesis The debate about who should own copyright in scholarly journal articles has intensified over the last few years due to opportunities presented by new technologies. Historically, copyright has been assigned to the publisher of a journal, however there are now suggestions that copyright could, and should, be left with the author. This project investigates the key players in the debate and their motivations with the aim of establishing whether a license is adequate for resolving the debate.
1 y separately published work icon A Study of the Australian Novel and its Relationship with the Publishing Industry in the United Kingdom: Learning from the Past and Looking into the Future Stephanie Hardcastle , Melbourne : 2001 Z1307377 2001 single work thesis This study investigates the Australian novel and its relationship with the publishing industry in the United Kingdom. It also explores Australian literature's international profile, as well as the British book industry and its attitude to Australian writing. The study asks why Australian literature is not as successful in the United Kingdom as it could be and investigates possible solutions. Findings based on the results of interviews conducted with members of the publishing industry show that while difficulties exist, the Australian publishing industry is proactively seeking publishing opportunities in Britain.

New technologies allow publishers to expand the definition of publishing by enabling material to be published online and accessed by consumers through the Internet. Using a case study of the travel publisher, Lonely Planet, this study investigates the effects of online publishing on conventional publishing.

The study suggests that the success of any ABC children's book is the result of a combination of marketing strategies that have been selectively undertaken to suit the children's market, with the popularity of the particular ABC characters taken into account for merchandising opportunities.

Marshall McLuhan was prescient about many aspects of these challenges, but commercial firms are reinventing his wheel in terms of the way they think about technology and books. Content (including copyright), capacity and consumers are the three core issues considered in this thesis; they suggest that success will lie in understanding the decentralised and two-way nature of new media.
1 y separately published work icon Baby Boomers : A Report on the Commercialisation of Adult Trade Book Publishing in Australia in the 1980s Jo Bramble , Melbourne : 2000 Z1294846 2000 single work thesis This study explores the commercial and cultural pressures on adult book publishing in Australia in the 1980s and considers how publishing responded to those pressures. The period was characterised by local and international mergers and acquisitions, a trend toward vertical integration in business, diversification of product, and the emergence of celebrity publishing. With rising interest rates, firms needed to reduce debt, improve profitability and minimise the costs of product acquisition. Penguin Books Australia, one of the two major players in trade publishing in the 1980s, is used as a major source of information for this study.

Then, on the basis of evidence of the effect of taxes on books in over fifty countries, it is argued that such a tax would be detrimental for Australia.
