BiographyHistory

Patrick O'Donohoe was a leader in the Young Ireland movment. He was tried for treason, with fellow leaders William Smith O'Brien, Thomas Francis Meagher and Terrence B. McManus, and convicted at Clonmel in October 1848. The death sentence was commuted to transportation and the group was transported to Van Dieman's Land and docked at Hobart Town in April 1850.

O'Donohoe soon established the Irish Exile and Freedom's Advocate and wrote much of its copy. The newspaper is thought to have been distributed as far afield as Melbourne, Sydney and New Zealand. In 1853 O'Donohoe escaped from Van Dieman's Land and died the following year in the USA.
