Aboriginal Australians were at the centre of his life's work but he was not able to secure permission to leave his country until 1990. Buoyed by post-Perestroika visits from Australians including Oodgeroo Noonuccal he eventually began a new life in the country he had studied for so long. He was a colleague of Iris Clayton at the Institute of Aboriginal Studies in Canberra.
