Louys was a Romantic French poet and writer born in Belgium. He is renowned for his writings containing lesbian and classical themes. Bulletin editor and publisher A. G. Stephens had his imported copy of Les Adventures du Roi Pausole intercepted by Customs in 1902, when it was Louys' most recent work, prompting letters to the newspapers from Stephens that as a student of French literature 'the works of modern novelists are just as necessary to me as are Bossuet's sermons or Racine's plays'. Stephens was allowed his copy, but three of Louys' other works were banned in Australia, in 1931, 1936 and 1946.
