BiographyHistory

Bookseller and publisher Robert Mackay was founded by Robert Mackay, who arrived in Sydney from Scotland in 1853. The business was active in Sydney at 249 Elizabeth Street in the 1850s, and in Melbourne from 1860 to 1877 at the Glasgow Book Warehouse, located first in Bourke Street, and then in Collins Street. Mackay was an agent for Blackie and Co., the Scottish publishing house.

Predominantly a bookseller, Mackay gathered a large stock of theological books and bibles. Robert Mackay left Australia for New Zealand in 1877, and the business was taken over by M. L. Hutchinson.
