BiographyHistory

Arthur Locker was educated at Pembroke College, Oxford and gained his BA in 1851. He began his career in a mercantile office at Liverpool and then emigrated to Australia in 1852 to search for gold. After unsuccessful attempts at prospecting he worked as a journalist, eventually returning to live in England in 1861. Some of his novels have Australian settings such as Sweet Seventeen (1866), On a Coral Reef (1869) and Stephen Scudamore the Younger (1871). Upon his return he contributed to magazines and newspapers and from 1863 to 1870 worked for The Times. He was appointed as editor of The Graphic in 1870, a position he held until 1890.
