Jessie Bate left school at the age of 14, going back to it in middle age to reach Honours Degree status in 1974. She became a teacher. She has short stories and poems published in literary magazines and broadcast on the BBC, and won the H E Bates Short Story Award, 1984.

She came to Australia in 1986. She has retired, and enjoys, as she says, "most outdoor things; walking, swimming, birdwatching, gardening". She also does a variety of craftwork. She is a member of the ARPA, PROBUS and the Writers' Centre, and organizes a local writers' group.
