1 Lost and Won. A Story of A Sister's Love J. M. B. , 1896 single work short story Willie Hannah is discovered to have embezzled cheques from the company of the Robson brothers who had hired him at an inflated wage so that he could support his mother and his sister Maggie when their father died. Maggie swears she will save him and make him a man so they voyage to Australia. She works as a governess and he as assistant on a country station where brother and sister Maud and Harold Drummond become close friends - Harold falling in love with Maggie. Mr Drummond snr is killed in a convict uprising on the farm which sees the women imperiled in the dairy. Maggie refuses to leave. Brother and sister journey to the Bathurst goldfields where their friend Willie succumbs to gambling. Maggie rescues him with the help of a big US miner Red Bill who also loves Maggie. The convicts who killed Mr Drummond are caught trying to rob Maggie and Willie, and lunched. Story then goes to the Bendigo diggings. Willie rescues fellow miners and becomes leader of a mine group. After his illness he and Maggie and Maud and Harold return to Scotland for family reunions and all return to live in Australia. (PB)
