— Appears in: The Australian Journal , February vol. 8 no. 93 1873; (p. 293-294) A strong, beautiful and respectable woman, Barbara Walsh, marries a scapegrace Englishman sent to the island's civil service to avert his marriage to a farmer's daughter, Lucy Cleeve, seduced in England. When Lucy appears in Tasmania the liaison resumes until the wife murders Lucy and castrates her husband. [A footnote coyly refers to a similar incident in England.] (PB)

1 Isabella of England : A Tale of the Olden Time Nemo (fl. 1867) , 1868 single work novella romance historical fiction Tale of England and France in the days of the Crusades. Isabella d'Angoulême is betrothed to Henry de Lusignan but John of England desires her hand and it appears she must submit. Her cousin, Marie, daughter of France's King Philip, is engaged to Prince Arthur of Britain. On the way to marry Henry, Isabella is abducted by Queen Ellinor, John's mother, and forcibly married to him. The fortunes of the French and English courts continue, John being the villain who after causing great sufferings and misery, meets a fittingly grotesque end. (PB)
1 Kate Dunstan; or, The Penitent Nemo (fl. 1867) , 1867 single work short story Kate Dunstan, indulged as a child, is left a rich orphan by her parents' death. Needing money to marry her poor lover she forges her guardian aunt's signature, is arrested and sentenced to Van Diemen's Land. She describes the horrors of the voyage including a bloody mutiny by the male convicts caused by illness, bad provisions and cruelty. On arrival the convicts were all tried and the ringleaders hung, partly on the evidence of a friend of Kate's. This friend was abducted from the house where she and Kate were assigned, and murdered by convicts for revenge. Kate eventually sets up a school and marries but her past follows her - she and her husband leave Tasmania for Melbourne and then Adelaide where after a short happiness and the birth of a son she is again discovered and her husband dies. The tale ends with her return to England. (PB)
1 The Physician's Daughter Nemo (fl. 1867) , 1867 single work short story
— Appears in: The Australian Journal , 14 September vol. 3 no. 107 1867; (p. 41-44) The daughter of a doctor who runs an insane asylum becomes the beloved object of an inmate's affections. When her father refuses his marriage proposal he goes quite mad and some time later stabs the father, killing him. (PB)
