Notes

  • 'Nemo' appears to have been a writing name used by William Wilkes (q.v.) during the period he was editor of the Moreton Bay Courier (1848-1856). However, this remains to be established conclusively.
  • 'Nemo' appears to have also used the writing name 'Quiz' (q.v.).
  • In a note which accompanied the poem 'Old Times in Brisbane' (Moreton Bay Courier, 30 September, 1848, p. 3) 'Nemo' claimed that they were also the author of the poems 'The Cabbage War', 'The Cleveland Point Whale' [sic], and 'The Ghost That Appeared to the Editor' [sic]. Whilst 'Nemo's' claims regarding the first two poems seems credible, some doubt exists as to whether 'Nemo' wrote 'Of a Ghost That Appeared to the Editor', which might in fact have been written by the English journalist and author Douglas Jerrold.
