Romance and brotherly honour in the Franco-Prussian war. A Jesuit novice carries out his dead brother's dying request from the battlefront and seeks and marries the innocent girl he had seduced. Then 'George the Nun' seeks his own death in the war ... Slight; ironic twists. (PB)
1 The Masterpiece of Crime Jean Richepin , 1891 single work short story
— Appears in: The Australian Journal , March vol. 26 no. 310 1891; (p. 395-398)
Study of a second-rate French writer who commits a double murder and a robbery, implicating another man who is found guilty of the crime. Frustrated by the lack of recognition for the genius of his crime he publishes a 'fictional' confession under his true name, but while the story is praised he is not. When he confesses to the police he is locked up as a madman ... stark; coldness well conveyed. (PB)
