Well-told yarn with a simple plain romance threaded through it. Set in Australia - with some interesting side comments on US vs. British diggers' justice. (PB)

Interesting reminiscence of the time of the murder and the meeting with the ghost. Strong bush flavour. (PB)

1 The Belle of the Snowy River : A Tale of Love and War Edwin M. Merrall , 1875 single work short story adventure romance Set on the Kiandra goldfields soon after the rush began, a cultivated gold buyer, John Harris, comes between the honest miner Louey Mills, and his love, Norma Lane, the 'Belle'. Inflamed by the scheming 'Lip-trap Hardy' who plans to rob Harris, Mills is incited to shoot Harris who - having seduced Norma - is leaving the diggings. Hardy tomahawks Harris to death and with the aid of trackers he is captured and tried. Mills finally meets his death in the Second Maori war in New Zealand. (PB)

— Appears in: The Australian Journal , February vol. 10 no. 117 1875; (p. 331-333) Set in the Monaro (Maneroo) highlands, three miners determine to find the source of the gold discovered in the mountains - locating it in a narrow strip of land they call the Pinnacle Gate. A dream of rich jewels, caverns of precious stones and gold, gnomes etc. proves itself to be just that ... a dream. Slight but generally well told. (PB)

— Appears in: The Australian Journal , January vol. 10 no. 116 1875; (p. 262-264) Dick discovers about £500 of gold while fossicking on the Bendigo diggings just after splitting with his mates Tom and Harry. Determined not to drink it all away he plants the nugget, loses it, eventually finds it again, takes a drink to celebrate and weeks later turns out to be blind, paralysed and a cripple. (PB)
