Two cousins love the same woman, and a bushfire tempts one of them to leave his sleeping companion to his fate in their bush hut. Only the sight of the terrible flames nearing the hut awaken him to his crime, for he has been drinking, and he turns back ... Description of dry countryside etc are evocative, plot predictable. (PB)

— Appears in: The Australian Journal , January vol. 15 no. 176 1880; (p. 242-243) Slight Romance. A carriage accident near a village in Victoria introduces Montague to the woman he had loved and lost 20 years before. Her death leaves her daughter to his care and they fall in love, their marriage rewarding him for his earlier loss. (PB)
1 Time Will Tell G. M. , 1878 single work short story
— Appears in: The Australian Journal , March vol. 13 no. 154 (p. 343-348) Domestic happiness of a rich Victorian squatter and his wife is broken when an acquaintance from her youth in England appears at their station and attempts to blackmail her over her first husband's death. Her name is eventually cleared when the blackmailer produces an aged letter on his deathbed ... Generally well written romance with some melodrama and good evocation of the heat of an Australian summer. Pace speeds up, losing some control of tone as the story proceeds. (PB).

— Appears in: The Australian Journal , November vol. 13 no. 150 1877; (p. 137-141) A Melbourne lawyer and his daughter Adelaide return to Sunbury where they meet a neighbouring landowner Harold Clifton. He falls in love with Adelaide and they are to be married until a scorned suitor reveals the secret that Clifton's father was a criminal in the USA ... Some promise but an overly sentimental ending (PB).
1 Jenny : A Bush Flower G. M. , 1876 single work short story
— Appears in: The Australian Journal , May vol. 11 no. 132 1876; (p. 476-493) Jenny Stormonth returns from her Melbourne boarding school to keep house for her widowed doctor father in the little country township he serves. She quickly meets the artistic and cultivated Brandon Arthur of Narramboluc station and his dashing visitor Captain Bracebridge, both of whom are attracted to her. A cricket match at their township, Euramba, a visit to Narramboluc, and a horse-breaking exhibition allow Bracebridge to win Jenny's heart - but he has to wait two years before they can marry. Slowly his letters dwindle until he does not reply to Jenny's last letter, and she on a picnic is lost and saved by Brandon at the cost of his own health ... Unsentimental romantic theme developed amid domestic and bush scenes. (PB)
