BiographyHistory

Lewis was a world famous yachtsman who grew up in New Zealand and spent most of his life there. He also lived for considerable periods in Raratonga (a Pacific island), England and Australia. He qualified as a medical practitioner in Leeds in 1942 and served as a medical officer in the Second World War. He wrote a number of books about the sea and about sailing, perhaps the most famous being Ice Bird : The First Single-Handed Voyage to Antarctica (1975).
