A webzine specialising in flash fiction (stories under 500 words), Antipodean SF (aka AntiSF) was established out of Macksville, NSW, by Ion Newcombe. (It later relocated to Nambucca Heads.) The first edition of the magazine, published in February 1998, outlined its motivation as the opportunity to provide writers of speculative fiction, especially Australian writers, a fresh outlet in what was then the new medium of online publishing. In his contribution to Australian Speculative Fiction: A Genre Overview, Newcombe records that his intention was to focus on stories that surprise, examine other realms, highlight other points of view, and investigate anything that generates a sense of awe (p.159).

Newcombe also produces the AntiSF Radio Show, a weekly program that features two or three stories, usually narrated by the authors themselves. The show is broadcast to the Nambucca Valley (NSW mid-North Coast) on Sunday evenings by community radio station 2NVR (105.9 FM).
