BiographyHistory

Spilogale Inc was founded in 2000 by Gordon Van Gelder in order to publish the bi-monthly speculative-fiction magazine Fantasy and Science Fiction (F&SF). First published by Mystery House in 1949 as Fantasy Magazine, it later became known as The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction and eventually as Fantasy and Science Fiction. Today, the magazine is the world's second-longest-running science-fiction magazine, surpassing Amazing Stories in total number of issues published and exceeded only by Astounding/Analog.

Gordon Van Gelder began his career in publishing as an editorial assistant at St. Martin's Press in 1988, having just graduated from Princeton University. In January 1997, he became the editor of The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction following the resignation of Kristine Kathryn Rusch. He continued working at St. Martin's until October 2000, at which time he bought the magazine from Mercury Press.

Notes

  • 'Spilogale' is the genus to which the four species of skunks known as spotted skunks belong. The connection between that animal and Van Gelder's company is likely through an interest shared with his father, Richard Van Gelder, who was once the Curator of Mammalogy at the American Museum of Natural History.
