BiographyHistory

Frank Sheed completed an Arts degree at Sydney University in 1916. In 1926 he graduated in law. In the same year he married the author Maisie Ward in England and they founded there the publishing firm Sheed and Ward, which became the leading publisher of Catholic theology and apologetics in the English speaking world. Apart from theology, Sheed and Ward also published many works by well known writers such as Belloc, Chesterton, Undset and Mauriac. In addition to translating a number of literary works, Frank Sheed wrote many books in the fields of autobiography, religion and politics, including such well known titles as A Map of Life (1933), Communism and Man (1938), Theology and Sanity (1946) and Society and Sanity (1953). He was the driving force behind the London Catholic Evidence Guild and is said to have delivered over 7,000 open air lectures. In later years he and his wife moved to USA. Their son, Wilfrid Sheed, is a US novelist of note.
