Shortly after his arrival in Australia in 1910, Lewis Lett moved to Papua New Guinea and worked as a supervising engineer for a large development company. After discovering petroleum there with his partner, G. H. Thomas, in 1911, Lewis continued his explorations, before finally settling in Port Moresby, becoming a Reuter's correspondent. He was a contributor to the London Times, the Manchester Guardian, Blackwood's Magazine and Cornhill Magazine. Some of Lewis Lett's other published works include Knights Errant of Papua (1935), The Papuan Achievement (1942), Papuan Gold : The Story of the Early Gold Seekers (1943), Papua : Its People and its Promise : Past and Future (1944) and a biography, Sir Hubert Murray of Papua (1949).
