Meredith McKinney, the daughter of Judith Wright and Jack McKinney, spent her early years at Tamborine, Queensland. She later lived in Kyoto for eighteen years where she taught English language and literature at Kobe University of Foreign Studies.

McKinney has translated short stories and poems from Japanese to English, including her mother's collection, The Flame Tree ([1993?]), and Natsume Soseki's Kokoro (2011).
