Lorna Fischer was born into a pioneering family in Queensland. At the age of two she lost a leg through a poisonous spider bite; nevertheless, Fischer excelled at school and recalls that period of her life fondly. Leaving school as a thirteen year old, Fischer assisted with duties in her own home and those of neighbours. She married at nineteen and bore three daughters, but the marriage eventually failed. Fischer worked at a range of occupations from sales assistant to librarian.

Fischer re-married in 1949 and lived variously at Mr Isa, Townsville, Innisfail and in Western Australia before returning to Queensland. She has been a lifelong advocate for the rights of workers, women and Aboriginal peoples.
