BiographyHistory

The influential international art magazine Studio, published in London from 1893, began in the 1890s to issue publications in addition to the periodical, some of which transcended the visual arts and entered into broader cultural studies, including literature. In 1963 the Reverend Timothy Beaumont purchased the business and sold Studio Magazine to Hearst. He joined the book publishing operation with Vista to form Studio Vista, which published books on avante-garde art and culture. From 1986 Studio Vista was an imprint of Cassell.

A New York office was established in 1932, publishing as Studio Publications, which became independent of the parent company. Following its merger with Viking in 1959 Studio Publications published a broad range of high quality books on art and culture. The imprint lapsed in the 1980s but following its revival by Michael Fragnito has published upmarket, generously illustrated house and lifestyle books.
