BiographyHistory

Burns, Oates and Washbourne was formed in 1920 when the Catholic publishing house Burns and Oates purchased R. and T. Washbourne, also a Catholic publishing house, which had been operating in London since the 1870s. Hutchinson acquired a majority shareholding in 1929, and the company was sold to Eyre and Spottiswoode in 1939, but retained its Catholic character. When Thomas Ferrier Burns acquired it in 1948 he created BOW Holdings for the company and its associated firms and periodicals. At that time the firm reverted to the name Burns and Oates.
