BiographyHistory

Moritz Michaelis was born in Hannover, then part of Prussia, of Jewish background. He studied Medicine for a year but, unable to continue paying fees, he was then apprenticed to a linen merchant. While working for the merchant he was sent to Manchester. Owing to ill-health he decided to migrate to Australia where he entered into a partnership in a tannery with his nephew. He was active in some Jewish community groups and also acted for a time as the Honorary Consul for Prussia in Melbourne.
