Marija Mykolaityte-Slaveniene studied German language and literature at Vytautas Didysis University in Kaunas, Lithuania. She began writing poetry at an early age and later made a name for herself as a poet, having published in several pre-war Lithuanian literary journals. She was the sister of the prominent Lithuanian writer and poet Vincas Mykolaitis Putinas (q.v.) and the letters he sent to her in Australia were edited by Jurgis Janavicius, and published under the title Putino Laiakai Australijon [Putinas' letters to Australia], 1971.
