Alan Collins grew up in the Isabella Lazarus Home for Jewish Children in Hunter's Hill, NSW. His mother had died giving birth to him and his father had remarried. He later worked at a variety of jobs, and moved to Melbourne. His writing focused on the experiences of Jewish Australians, and he recorded his own story in the autobiography Alva's Boy (2008), published just after his death.
