'"Uncle Rupert", the story begins, "was our Cargo Cult." Enchanting, intriguing and elusive, the man who throws money over back fences starts work in a bank under the egregious Mr Harfglass. Propelled by fear of marriage to the predatory Iro, he flees the bank and goes on the track. But he always cares for those he loves. He meets Godfrey Bronze, a battler for the battlers all his life, and wins political office. He becomes Foreign Minister and "President of the World", but, again, he opts for freedom to seek better ways of "throwing money over back fences". He uses the strengths of the capitalist order to benefit the poor and weak and bring more colour, brightness and purpose to the lives both of those who give and those who receive. Unique even in the realm of heroes, Rupert has the capacity to change the world but retains an endearing innocence, amiability and selflessness. He sees even those, like Mr Harfglass and fellow banker Mr. Collopy, whose lifestyle he abhors, as victims of the system.'

1 y separately published work icon The Hedonists J. W. C. Cumes , Australia : Crystal Dreams Publications , 2003 Z1402660 2003 single work novel 'The Hedonists is a rollicking story of sex and diplomacy in the lives of two dedicated pleasure-seekers: Randall Pascoe Maitland, a young diplomatist who sprinkles his erotic escapades with occasional prickings of conscience and even fewer acts of heroism; and Howard Winston Jocelyn The Third, an up-and-coming executive and ex-Don Juan, now obsessed with a she-devil. Traversing a largely joyous and self-indulgent world, they journey together from Africa via New York and Mexico, to a rambunctious finale in Mugga Way, in far-off Australia. On the way, a beautiful playmate, Angela, recants and shows them another road. Do they take it? Every dedicated, wannabe and closet hedonist will enjoy this fascinating romp towards an answer, supplied by a former Ambassador whose story gives some credence to Angela's claim that "diplomats are the crap end of humanity.'
