'The nude painting Chloe, created in 1875 by French artist Jules Lefebvre, which has hung at Young and Jackson Hotel since 1909, is a much-loved Melbourne cultural icon. Chloe has been the subject of controversy and mythologising, particularly in relation to the Parisian model who sat for the painting. This production-based thesis, through a work of historical fiction and an exegesis, imaginatively renders and recontextualises Lefebvre’s Chloe to illustrate how these myths have, in part, contributed to reductive portrayals and interpretations of both the painting and its model.

'The manuscript “Capturing Chloe” is a fictional narrative tracing Chloe’s impact on an Australian family during World War One, and the volatile world of Jules Lefebvre’s Parisian model, as she and other proletarian women determine to challenge the social and political forces that oppress them in the aftermath of the Second French Empire and the Franco-Prussian War.

'The exegesis uses textual analysis and historical research to interrogate the origins of Chloe, and the source of myths that have variously constructed or constituted identities for the painting’s model. While exploring shifting ideas about the model’s identity since the painting’s debut in 1875, this analysis demonstrates the significance of textual artefacts in the ongoing process of reinterpreting and remaking Chloe. The exegesis explores an anecdote Lefebvre shared about his model, and a tale the Anglo-Irish writer George Moore wrote about “Lefebvre’s Chloe” in his memoirs. This work describes Moore’s student days in Paris, and his mythologising of a young woman who, I propose, may have been the model for Chloe.

'By recontextualising, reimagining and rewriting myths about Chloe’s model, and exploring the painting’s origins and its reception by Australian viewers throughout the decades, this thesis contributes new insights into and an original understanding of one of Australia’s most celebrated cultural icons.'

'In 1985 Italo Calvino wrote a series of lectures (later published as ‘memos) in which he proposed five values he deemed crucial to literature as it moved into the next millennium: lightness, quickness, ‘crystal’ exactitude, visibility, and multiplicity. This creative thesis addresses Calvino’s Six Memos for the Next Millennium in three ways. First, the rise of these values within the Calvino corpus is explored, including Calvino’s creative theoretical approach used in Six Memos for the Next Millennium. Second, Calvino’s values are reimagined in relation to contemporary literature and context. As Calvino’s memos address the current millennium, this thesis responds from the current millennium by contrasting the memos with recent works that can be read as exhibiting Calvino’s values and their binary opposites (i.e. weight, lingering, ‘flame’exactitude, ephemerality, and singularity). Third, Calvino’s memos are explored through creative practice by applying Calvino,s memos to produce five fictional works: The Perfect Democracy, Executive Chairman’s Letter to the Shareholders (a sample of the larger work Paige & Powe), 뻐꾸기 (a sample of the larger work Little Emperor Syndrome), Unlabelled Bottles, and Las Artes Hypnóticas (2022). The creative works serve as a conclusion, as evidence of the relevance Calvino’s memos have in addressing the predicaments in contemporary literature addressed in the theoretical portion of this thesis. This thesis examines each of Calvino’s memos in the various forms that contemporary prose fiction has taken. As the current millennium has been defined as an age of ‘too much’(i.e. too many subjects and issues to examine, too many potential associations to make, too many competing voices to vii represent, too many forms of competing media, and too many potential readers and readings to account for), this thesis examines how this has impacted contemporary fiction:

(a) The values of weight and lightness are explored in the ‘Maximalist’ novel (as defined by Stefano Ercolino);

(b) The values of quickness and lingering are explored in contemporary digital literature (i.e. prose fiction that is ‘digital born’);

(c) The values of crystal and flame exactitude are explored in the contemporary use of ‘stream-of-consciousness’ prose and interpretations of the ‘ideal text;

(d) The values of visibility, ephemerality, and ekphrastic strategy are explored in multimedial prose fiction; and

(e) The values of multiplicity and singularity are explored in contemporary encyclopaedic fiction, paranoid fiction, and the ‘novel of information multiplicity’ (as defined by John Johnston).'

1 y separately published work icon Places of Publication and the Australian Book Trade: A Study of Angus & Robertson's London Office, 1938-1970 Jason Ensor , Perth : 2010 Z1791722 2010 single work thesis 'Places of Publication is a sustained study of the practice of Angus & Robertson's London office as publishers and exporters / importers, using a mixed-methods approach combining the statistical analysis of bibliographic data with an interpretative history of primary resource materials. Although this thesis is the fourth to interrogate the extensive Mitchell Library holdings of the Angus & Robertson archives, it is the first whose central concern is the company's production and distribution of Australian titles within the United Kingdom and further afield through its London office. Often indicated as worthy of further investigation, this is an area of history which to date has only been broadly scoped without reference to key (often restricted) archival volumes. Exploring the premise that there are cultural and commercial links between books produced at home and books imported from overseas, this study examines whether an Australian publisher could avoid becoming subject to the same socio-economic forces that British publishers claimed underpinned their international trade. Indeed, within the historical context of a strong British presence in Australian publishing and bookselling across the course of the twentieth century, this thesis asks in what ways did Angus & Robertson replicate, challenge or transform the often highly-criticised commercial practices of British publishers in order to develop an export trade for Australian books in the United Kingdom?'

The thesis offers, in part, a revaluation of theoretically under-emphasized texts (as well as texts that have been the subject of much higher levels of scrutiny), in order to establish recurrent threads within Australian cinema. In doing this, the thesis offers new and original knowledge in the form of developing a perspective for a revised critical and theoretical analysis of genre cinema within Australian cinema, challenging the presumption of the kinds of texts that can be seen as articulating the nation. The groups of films examined herein form nodes through which a network of important and divergent ideas about nation, national identity and social organization come together in the form of narrative and thematic undercurrents.'

After more than 200 years of colonisation, the theft of land and the imposition of an alien dominant culture, the resistance of the Indigenous peoples can still be heard in the call to lookout, beware. We aim to hear the voices of Indigenous and non-Indigenous writers and their experiences of culture and law, and to be (a)ware of the harms imposed on Indigenous peoples through continuing practices of colonialism. Balayi challenges its readers and contributors to be alert to injustice in the relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians, and offers an invitation to speak about this injustice. It is only recently that the voices of Indigenous peoples have been publicly heard at all by non-Indigenous peoples. Conversely, Indigenous peoples have been compelled to listen and pay heed to non-Indigenous peoples, and even to speak in non-Indigenous languages. Histories of Australia have excluded the rich and diverse cultural experiences of Indigenous peoples and played down the degree of injustice under which they have suffered since first European settlement. Indigenous peoples still labour under the myth of their physical extinction and the extinction of their traditional laws and customs. In issues of rights to land, sovereignty, reconciliation, and identity, Indigenous voices have too often been silenced, or when spoken, dismissed or trivialised.
