BiographyHistory

David Nutt began selling books around 1829, and in 1838 founded the publishing firm which bore his name. Nutt had a connection with the German publishing firm of Adolph Asher, and specialised in foreign texts, but was also well respected as a publisher of religious and educational books, and scholarly literary and antiquarian works.

Alfred Trubner Nutt took over the firm in 1878, and its subsequent publications reflected his interest in folklore and antiquities. David Nutt was the first publisher of Australian Legendary Tales (1896) and More Australian Legendary Tales (1898) by K. Langloh Parker.

The business was sold in 1916 to Simpkin, Marshall, Hamilton, Kent and Company.
