A prolific English journalist, poet, dramatist and novelist, G. R. Sims initially established himself as a humorist and satarist with Fun magazine and The Referee but later carved out a reputation for writing social reform articles - particularly about the plight of the poor in London's slums. In addition to writing a number of popular novels he produced numerous plays (many as collaborations), several of which had long runs and international success. His theatreical works were also staged in Australia, either in their orginal form or as burlesque adaptations.
