Findlater spent her childhood years in Brisbane in the care of her grandmother; her mother having died when Findlater was very young. She contracted polio at the age of eighteen, but recovered and later travelled overseas. In the late 1980s Findlater took up an interest in writing and subsequently enrolled in a creative writing course where she developed her short story writing techniques.
