According to the biographical notes in the preface to Scattered War Leaves, Galli was an Italian archaeologist, lecturer and author who arrived in Australia in 1914, soon after the outbreak of World War I. Australian War Memorial records indicate that Galli volunteered for military service in 1914, and served as a Lance Corporal in the 1st Infantry Battalion, AIF. He was wounded at Gallipoli in May 1915 and returned to Australia that August. He appears to have spent the next few years touring Australia, delivering lectures on the war and recruiting volunteers. Australian War Memorial records indicate that Galli was 33 years of age when he enlisted in 1914. He appears to have later held the rank of sergeant.
