BiographyHistory

Daughter of Herbert Holtham, she was born in Brighton, England. Her father set up the Brighton Working Man's Club, England, a forerunner of the WEA. It is not clear when she came to SA but in 1873 she married the widowed storekeeper Robert Burden in Kadina, SA. They had seven children. Domestic ties did not distract Eleanor from her interest in intellectual matters. She is remembered as sitting in her hard-backed chair reading German texts until late into the night.
