Don Henderson commenced an apprenticeship as a fitter and turner in the early 1950s and worked briefly for the Snowy Mountains Authority in 1957. During the early sixties, he travelled to Brisbane and together with Geoffrey and Nancy Wills he became a founding member of the Union Singers. He became one of Australia's most prolific and important working class song-writers, influenced by the traditions of the bush ballads, Tex Morton and balladeer Woody Guthrie from the United States of America.. Henderson was an active member of the Queensland Folk Federation and played an importatnt part in its formation.
